Giancarlo Valle is an architect turned designer with an affinity toward the tactile exploration of materials. Currently showing at Magen H Gallery in New York are 11 unique and limited edition works in dialogue with the gallery’s significant French post war vintage objects. Valle is known for making meticulous maquettes prior to producing the pieces, a creative process that brings him back to the handmade after such a long relationship with the digital and years of CAD drawings. The miniatures create context for the designs while leaving room for improvisation.

Alongside the gallery’s signature pieces made ‘mini’ are a Le Corbusier sliding partition/blackboard, Michel Chauvet “Poisson” sculptural desk (1956) and ceramics from the 1960’s—giving Valle a chance to play with his favorite material, once saying in an interview he appreciated the unpredictability of ceramics. The pieces brought to life from Studio Giancarlo Valle include the Zinc Pendant and Caged armchair (2021) made of hand carved oak, mohair and alpaca bouclé.
