Ana Mendieta practiced “earth-body” art as a way to connect with nature through performative acts. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1948, Mendieta spent time traveling through México in the 1970’s where she developed the body of work that would come to define her practice.

In October, MASA Galería presented their fifth addition to honor the legacy of Ana Mendieta. For this edition MASA invited México City based curator and writer, Su Wu to curate and collaborate with the Estate of Ana Mendieta to present for the first time, her filmworks including the first film of ‘Silueta’—a series filmed at the Yagul archaeological site in 1974.

In true MASA fashion, the experience of the space, art and objects is meant to transport the audience into a state of connection with storytelling. Su Wu invited installations by five contemporary artists, architects, and designers, to explore gallery seating as an immersive part of the experience, not an afterthought. Works by México-based and Latinx artists including Frida Escobedo, Pia Camil, Solange Pessoa, Adeline de Monseignat and EWE were presented as a tactile element of the one-of-kind experience.

“Elementos Vitales” is on exhibition at La Clinica in Oaxaca City through December 15, 2021.
