Daniel Lezama is one of Mexico’s most influential contemporary painters, known for work that weaves together mythology, history, politics, and everyday life. Interested in the cultural narratives and personal philosophies that inform his practice, Materia collaborated with Lezama on a multi-format editorial feature combining conversation, photography, and film.

Published as Tropical Melancholy, the project sought to move beyond the finished paintings and into the ideas, references, and observations that shape them. Through long-form dialogue, portraiture, and moving image, the feature created a deeper encounter with the artist and the world from which his work emerges.
