NATA JANBERDZE AND KETI TOLORAIA FOUNDERS OF ROOMS STUDIO

Rooms is a Tibilsi-based studio founded by artists Nata Janberidze and Keti Toloraia. The studio has stood out as leaders in Georgia’s contemporary design community since launching in 2007 in part because of their ability to translate rich craft tradition into an authentic and humanistic design language. The duo draw inspiration from their childhood scenes growing up in Georgia surrounded by Soviet era architecture and where they experienced extreme waves of cultural change. Rooms focus on creating distinct spaces and collectable design pieces that invoke personal experiences and evolving narratives. Distant Symphony—their latest show at Emma Scully Gallery in New York—shares a retrospective from past collections and recent work including pieces designed in collaboration with Georgian artists Shotiko Aptsiauri, Salome Chigalashvili and Mariana Chkonia that dialogue with perspectives from other disciplines as a medium to escape forced isolation brought on by the pandemic. Rooms founders, Nata Janberidze and Keti Toloraia, expressed that “the show is very personal and is based on a specific experience of ‘getting closer to one’s self’ that we want to bring into space. Every piece plays an important role in expressing the feeling we wanted to convey visually. They all create one specific feel—hence the word ‘symphony’ in the title of our show.”

Distant Symphony is Rooms largest showing in the Americas to date, where cultural influences, arts and craft tradition and transformation of space mix with the studio’s love of simplicity.

“The distant Symphony is an impulse to look inwards. It emphasizes the emotional force of interiority and inner life that determine our creative output. It is like showing our inner “homes”. It is about the need for solitude and the love of companionship at the same time.”
