CHÂTEAU, A NEW COLLECTION BY LA-BASED ATELIER DE TROUPE
Photography by Yoshihiro Makino
LA-based design studio Atelier de Troupe, presents Château, a new collection of lighting and furniture exploring early forms of environmental design. The objects joining the permanent collection include the Château chair and tables, the Cloche pendants, Bambou chandeliers, and Shell Vases—using the studio’s signature decorative and structural features, the collection represents a dialogue with the binaries that structure contemporary life: fleeting and forever, raw and refined.
This latest collection also celebrates the studio’s 10th anniversary. Founded in 2011 by Gabriel Abraham whose experience in film informs the narrative and design process—constructing a set, thinking of the place, environment, then building a story around it. Hence, Château was photographed by Yoshihiro Makino at Anderson House in Los Angeles, Topanga Canyon. Built in 1958 by Canadian Architect W. Earl Wear, Alexander Home provides a canvas that speaks to the collections’ relationship between design, architecture and nature—blending in and at the same time standing out from its serene surroundings. Wear, who studied under John Lautner, integrated the principles of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Organic Architecture, an immediate inspiration for Abraham and his team. Château seeks to showcase geometric shapes and formations found in nature.
Atelier de Troupe collections reference the reserved Bauhaus, yet are ripe with a nostalgic nod to the vintage Italian and French design from Abraham’s childhood. Each Atelier de Troupe piece is hand manufactured by local fabricators. This end-to-end process minimizes waste and allows for responsible sourcing and extensive customization with organic materials such as mahogany, dark walnut, bronze glass, blackened or satin glass.
