JF CHEN, ITALY: MARIO CEROLI OF ‘MOBILI NELLO VALLE’ CHAIRS, MARKED POLTRONOVA (1972)

SIZED is an experience blurring the lines between art, design and performative life. The exhibition, on display through June 27 in Los Angeles, is presented by multidisciplinary OFFSITE.STUDIO and features over 300 objects by almost 60 collaborators. Curated by Founder and Creative Director Alexander May, this first iteration years in the making, brings together a community of creators—artists, designers, dealers and collectors—who give us a glimpse at the horizon of design. May’s focus on ‘site’ as its own medium is seen in moments throughout the exhibition where textiles, garments, ceramics, furniture and objects made by a range of emerging to established artists interact in intimate space with the viewer. The runway-like stage located on the ground floor levitates pieces like a set of Mario Ceroli of ‘Mobili Nello Valle’ chairs; Rick Owens foam ottoman; Tito Agnoli two-stitched saddle leather sofas; Casa Ahorita Teresita Head planters; and Chain Chair by 1000 Incorporated.

Throughout the rest of the 15,000 square foot space are striking works like Grave Site (Apple MacBook) by Luke Haeger, Angelo Mangiarotti Spiral Lights, Grid Chair, a collaboration between TIENDA X and Michael Tracy; and actor Luka Sabbat shows his first design piece Carseat Prototype, made of two 1969 mustang high back seats. A striking message about ‘site’ is also posted on the wall:

“SIZED IS LOCATED ON GABRILEÑO/TONGVA LAND. IN HONOR OF THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY, WHO CONTINUE TO LIVE AND WORK HERE TODAY, WE WISH TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE COLONIAL OCCUPATION WHICH EXISTS ON THEIR ANCESTRAL HOME”.

The upstairs mezzanine is hosted by TIWA Select in collaboration with YOLA Mezcal, a female-owned and bottled spirits brand, who together are unveiling special edition copitas for sipping mezcal designed by nine distinct artists. The whole affair marks an emerging immersive format that is snaking its way through global markets and fairs—impacting the way the viewer experiences art just as much as the space which ascribes more meaning to the objects we collect and bring into our homes and lives.
